The Programme – Lagos

On Friday morning half of the delegates visited St Saviour’s and the other half visited Lagos Prep School. They ran leadership seminars for teachers, had a tour of the school, and held an exhibition for families.

This was followed by a visit to British International School to meet students, run management workshops for the Senior Leadership Team and educational workshops for the academic staff.

We hosted an exhibition for all Year 9, 10 and 11 students in the afternoon, and had a very full reception in the evening at a local hotel for BIS families. Some very experienced exhibitors said that it was their busiest and most successful day in Nigeria for many years in visiting the country.

Saturday and Sunday

The Exhibition at the Wheatbaker Hotel attracted more than 100 families and the feedback from schools was extremely positive. Over half of the families who visited were considering entry in September 2018.

The VIP networking Reception at the British Deputy High Commissioner’s Residence hosted by the Department for International Trade was a great success. Over 25 local heads, British Council representatives and leading figures in education joined us on Saturday evening. Kate Rudd (pictured above), gave a passionate and inspiring update on the region.

Abuja – Monday and Tuesday

Abuja is the political capital of Nigeria and very few schools events or educational consultants operate in the city.

Therefore, we had a very full programme visiting schools, running an exhibition for a dozen or so influential families, leading a workshop for 40 local heads (below), and hosting a reception at the High Commissioner’s residence attended by 25 local Heads, as well as British Council, and Foreign Office staff.

5 – 7 October (Lagos) ? 8 – 9 October 2018 (Abuja) ? Nigeria

Paul Arkwright, pictured centre, is the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, and kindly hosted the Reception at his residence in Abuja.

Mr Arkwright said:

It was good to facilitate the visit and reception at the High Commission Residence and welcome leading British boarding schools from the UK to meet local Heads and proprietors. The evening was an excellent opportunity to promote the outstanding education offered by boarding schools in the UK and forge local partnerships for the future of the young generation in Nigeria today.

A thriving market – According to the latest ISC Census, Nigeria is the sixth largest country for sending boarding school students to the UK.

There are currently (ISC, 2017) nearly 1,500 Nigerian girls and boys in leading prep, senior, co-ed, girls’ and boys’ schools across the UK.

According to official statistics, and reported widely in the media including CNN, Nigeria is now out of recession.

This encouraging news is now reflected in the positive mood and interest of families.

Outstanding students – Nigerian students are motivated, high achieving, gifted and talented in sports and performing arts, familiar with boarding and of course they are first language English speakers.

British Government support – The event was supported by the Department for International Trade, Nigeria and other leading organisations.

TESTIMONIALS

Friday at the UK Boarding School Exhibition in Lagos was the best and most focussed event I’ve had the pleasure of taking part in during nine years of visits and exhibitions in Nigeria. This is in terms of developing relationships with schools, the high quality of enquiries and the quantity of parents interested in our school.

Gareth Collier, Principal, Cardiff Sixth Form College

This has been a most enjoyable trip, the families who attended were serious and the reception at the Deputy High Commission residence was excellent.

Caroline Pascoe, Headmistress, Monmouth School for Girls

The Anderson Education and Mark Brooks Education exhibitions are well planned, the venue is excellent and there was a steady stream of visitors.

Anthony Wilkins, Deputy Head, Rishworth

The Events were well-organised and strategically put together to maximise contact and recruitment opportunities. I have no hesitation in recommending the UK Boarding School Exhibition to other schools, and it is something that we will undoubtedly participate in again. Furthermore, we all know that while volume is good, it is the quality of the visitors to the fair that really counts ultimately, and again the families that I saw over the weekend definitely fit this bracket. I know how much hard work needs to be put in to make a series of events work properly and you and your team deserve high praise. I also know that the reception at the Deputy High Commissioner’s official residence was a great coup and can only serve to cement your growing pre-eminence in the Nigerian market.

Tim Fish, Headmaster, Earlscliffe

Thank you for all of your hard work on our behalf this week. This really was a good trip!

Chris Barton, Gordonstoun
